Nebula Hawk Bug - Starfighter

Commissioned in the year 2132, the Nebula Hawk Bug, both transformed conventional warfare, and defined new Genres of Combat, through it's deployment to the Stars:

Nebula Hawk Bug - Starfighter

Being equally at home, in both Space and Planet Side - the deployment flexibility of NH Bug, was achieved through the invention of the Proton Engine. Defying the Laws of Gravity, the Proton Engine brought almost instant acceleration - with none of the drawbacks, of a conventional Rocket Engine :) When installed in it's twin form (at the rear of NH Bug), did the Proton Engine, also cater for high levels of manoeuvrability - through independently varying, both it's thruster's deflection angles, and it's thruster's power levels (both port and starboard). The addition of a third Proton Engine (on the underside of NH Bug), also made it possible for rapid Elevation (both in Space and Planet Side) - and introduced the concept of a configurable, Location Hugging/Hovering combat approach method (both in Space and Planet Side). The strength of NH Bug, within conventional warfare, was fully realised through it's devastating Terrain Hugging Attack - whereby it could deliver it's range of armaments, at point blank range, with little to no, radar footprint! And of it's armaments/weapons, were they impressive indeed ... First: a turret mounted, twin mini gun, with 360 degrees of rotation - which was of value, both against enemy ground troops, and against lightly armoured transport vehicles. Second: two sponson mounted laser guns (one port one starboard, both medium power/range) - that could blast holes in, the armour of heavy battle tanks, whilst vaporising smaller targets! Third: two sponson mounted missile launchers (that were auto chain fed Destructors) - which could home in on, both larger targets, and more distant targets, that were protected by, even the thickest armour :) The Destructor missile, was a Nano Missile - which could overload the defence systems of it's target, and literally eat it's way through, conventional hull form armour. Thus, did the three weapon systems of NH Bug, cater for in total, all three ranges of conventional warfare - aka close, medium and long. Yet all three weapon systems, could also be used to devastating effect, within the Realms of Space Combat ... Only here, was the Bug's Terrain Hugging Attack, modified into a Starship Hull Form Hugging Attack, which would target key enemy Starship systems - such as communication arrays, weapon systems and engines. When it came to Dogfights in Space, did the Bug's Proton Engines, really come into their own :) Being capable of tight turns, with automatic elevation (to avoid incoming fire), and equipped with several local thrusters (for even greater control), the Bug could behave, as though she was somersaulting, through the waves of incoming enemy fire-power :) Fortunately, her two Pilots (one navigator, one guns) - were totally unaware, of such extreme changes in motion (thanks to internal motion suppressors). If the NH Bug, had one deficiency, it was that she featured no force field generators ... At the time of the Bug's commissioning, no reliable method had been found, to integrate a force field, into her cramped hull form - which was stocked full of weapon magazines (middle), Proton Engine fuel/reactor (aft), and various targeting/navigation computers (forward). It was thus decided, to manufacture the Bug, in high quantities, with something akin, to a conventional armoured hull form. There was however, an important improvement: as being manufactured from Plas-Steel, her one inch thick hull form, was equivalent to five inches thick, of conventional steel - which for any class of Fighter/Starfighter, had been previously unheard of! This helped to define, the Bug's role in conventional warfare, as for the most part, did conventional weapons (such as bullets, shells and missiles), simply bounce off. Even so, did the Bug, find itself at the mercy, of larger laser guns (both on land, and in space), together with the constant threat - of the Nano Missile/Torpedo! Her primary defence against such weapons, was purely her high speed, coupled with high manoeuvrability (which were both formidable). As for the Pilots? The Pilots of the NH Bugs, formed a connection with their Starfighter's - which could last a lifetime. As such, it was customary for them, to paint on the side of their weapon sponsons, tally marks for the number of enemy Starfighters (etc.), that they had defeated/destroyed. In turn, did the Pilots believe, that the glowing eyes of the Bug, helped deliver their Menacing Fire-power - and bring Fear/Doubt, to the Souls of their enemies :) Overall: The Nebula Hawk Bug, was the first widespread Starfighter, to become available (in the first half, of the twenty-second century). Though not fully refined, her design achieved, exactly what her designers - had wanted ... A devastating range of armaments, within a unique hull form (being much more spherical), that was powered by Proton Engines (of a high power/fast speed), on the smallest possible hull form footprint - which directly supported, the concepts of mass manufacture, as is needed in times of war! And as for those green eyes? Well ... There's nothing quite like seeing, a Fleet full of Bug Eyes, coming towards you, across the voids of Space :)
